Manifesto

A manifesto is not a complaint. A complaint requests politely. A complaint waits in line. A complaint apologises for being a complaint, then apologises again for taking up so much of your time. This is not that. These are six declarations from the long-term foreign resident in Japan who has finished pretending to be a guest, finished doing tatemae in rooms that never deserved it, and finished thanking institutions for the privilege of being humiliated by them. The fury here is the bill the love has run up.

Warning: No Tatemae Beyond This Point

Six declarations follow. Not for the tourist. Not for the honeymooner on their first cherry-blossom season. Not for the one who came back from a fortnight and is now considering moving. This is for the foreign resident who has run out of patience with their own politeness. If that is not you yet, close the tab. Come back in five years, when you have something specific to be furious about.

The Fax Machine Is Not a Culture

Defending bureaucratic absurdity as "Japanese culture" is the most successful gaslighting operation in this country's history. The fax is not philosophy. The hanko is not heritage. The seventeen-stamp form is not zen. It is a paper-based system that should have died in 1998 and is being kept alive by people too scared of being the one who finally pulls the fucking plug. Stop dignifying it. The friction is not sacred. It is just friction. Designed by committees, signed off by ministries, defended by nobody who actually has to use it.

We Are Not Guests

Ten years in. Fifteen years in. The marriage, the mortgage, the two children in elementary school, the residency stamp older than the latest prime minister. The compliment about chopsticks stopped being charming around year two. The "honoured foreign guest" rope stopped being flattering around year three. We pay the residence tax. We renew the card. We do the recycling at the right hour on the right fucking day. We are not visiting. We are not extras in your country's tourism reel. Behave accordingly.

We Will Not Be Invisible

Six foot two on the Yamanote line is not an apology you owe anyone. Take the seat. Take the space. Order the loud thing on the menu in a normal voice. Speak at the actual volume of an adult. The shrinking-to-fit was the country's idea. It was never yours. The bowing got you no closer to belonging. The apologising got you no closer to belonging. The smallness will not get you any further. Be the actual size of yourself. They have not earned you making yourself smaller.

No One Is Coming to Translate

The pension forms will not be in English. The earthquake instructions, the hospital intake, the rental contract, the school newsletter, the city tax bill, the My Number renewal letter, the boss's Slack message at 11pm on a Wednesday — none of it will be in English. No kind volunteer will arrive to translate. There is no special foreigner counter where someone fluent waits patiently for you. You learn to read or you learn to ask in Japanese. Or you leave. There is no fourth option, and the people who keep pretending there is are quietly burning another five years of their life every time they cope around it.

Honne Forever

Tatemae is for them. Honne is for us. We will no longer perform agreement with things we do not agree with. We will no longer nod through a proposal we think is fucking idiotic so the entire meeting room can save face on their way to a worse outcome. The cost of being called "difficult" is real. The cost of being called "easy" is a slow erasure, one nod at a time, until even your private thoughts start to sound like the script they handed you. Be difficult. Be the foreigner with an opinion. They are going to think it of you anyway. You might as well earn it.

The rage in this manifesto is real. So is the contempt. The reason we are still here, on year ten and beyond, is that the absurdity is also genuinely fucking funny. The man on the train who apologises for sitting next to us. The plastic banana case. The single cabbage that costs more than the wine. The 6pm cut-off on the bank app. The triplicate form for the form. If you have lost the ability to laugh at it, the country has won, and it is probably time to pack. The Gaiurai laughs first. Loudly. In English. In the lift.
